The 75th Annual South Bay Opening Day Boating Festival and Decorated Boat Parade
May 17, 18, & 19 2013
The public is invited to join the yacht clubs and boating organizations of the South Bay and the Port of Redwood City for the 2013 South Bay Opening Day. This year’s theme is “75 Years of Making Waves on the South Bay”
SBOD Festival events will begin Friday evening May 17th with a wonderful dinner at San Leandro YC and close Sunday morning May 19th with a Gin Fizz Brunch at the historic South Bay YC. There will be lots of great exhibits, water activities and other tasty dining options to fill your weekend. All activities (other than meals and libations) are free to the public. Come and experience the unique resource we have in our own Redwood Creek and the fun activities around the adjacent port facilities. Join with other yacht clubs and boating organizations in decorating, parading and having fun. Yacht club participants will each receive PICYA Coty points.
All those with Sailboats, Powerboats, Jet Ski’s, Canoes and Kayaks are invited to participate in the parade in support of this community event. Organizations are encouraged to participate by sponsoring a youth group or youth program. Register your boat now!
The highlight of the weekend will start on Saturday after 10:30 am line up for the parade. The Opening Day Decorated Boat Parade and Blessing of the Fleet will take place at the observation deck of the Port of Redwood City at 11:00. Spectators will vote for their favorite decorated boat to determine who will receive the coveted “Spectators Choice Award”. Enjoy the many exhibits in the Sequoia YC parking lot area Saturday, including booths by the Marine Science Institute, Police and Fire departments, West Marine/Leukemia Foundation, Dock-walkers, Power Squadron, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Our Grand Marshall this year is from the Coast Gard Rear Admiral Karl Schultz.
If you or your organization would like to participate with a free booth, please contact the SBOD we would love to include you in the festivities. Donations too are welcome and tax deductible.
Water activities also include; Coast Guard cutter Friday evening and Saturday, Rowing club and Kayaking demos, and the Sea and Mariner Scouts.
After the boat parade check out the booths and music as we wait the judge’s decisions and the exciting awards ceremony. Door prizes will be handed out too during your lunch at Sequoia YC. Dining Activities:
For dinners at Sna Leandro YC and Peninsula YC make reservation on your entry application or phone the appropriate Yacht Club and leave your name and reservation on their answering machine by Wednesday, May 15 to guarantee your spot. Don’t be late or you may go hungry. There may be bands playing at all meals, we’ll keep you posted.
